Join California's Climate Food Fight

A significant component of the Short Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction state regulation SB 1383 is a 20% increase in whole food donations. Large food generating businesses such as markets over 10,000 feet are now required to donate extra edible food from their operations to local food recovery organizations, such as food banks or pantries; and to record donations for the city and partner Second Harvest Food Bank. This effort prevents food waste, decreases greenhouse gas emissions from food decomposing in landfills, and feeds families.

From January 1st, 2022 to June 30th, 2022, Second Harvest Food Bank in Watsonville recovered 3,015,402 pounds of donated food throughout the county and distributed to local people in need. Some of the large markets in Watsonville that contribute generously are: Watsonville Staff of Life, Nob Hill Foods, Safeway, Grocery Outlet, and Target. Second Harvest Food Bank and the city are supporting additional large local markets to increase donations. Even if your market is not over 10,000 feet and required to donate, your market or business can still give back by donating to local food recovery organizations such as Loaves and Fishes and the Salvation Army.  cityofwatsonville.org/foodrecovery
