Food scrap collection reinstated across Watsonville schools

The City’s Green Schools Program has reinstated its food scrap collection at schools across Watsonville.

City staff train personnel from each school and build student-led “Green Teams.”

The City and schools from the Pajaro Valley Unified School Districts then work together to establish successful reduction programs to improve recycling, limit waste, reduce litter, and even collect food scraps to be turned into compost.

“My prize is helping kids do the right thing- to recycle instead of making trash- to be responsible for our own trash,” said a student from Radcliff Elementary School.

A single school can produce 60 pounds of food scraps at every meal, so collection at 18 schools helps reduce greenhouse gases emitted from plant waste in the landfield.

Soon, Watsonville residents will follow the footsteps of our schools by separating their food scraps from the trash.
