Climate Action Plan

Climate change creates risks and challenges for the City of Watsonville, as we will be threatened with sea-level rise, increased temperatures, heavier and more intense storms, air pollution, increased health problems and increased strain on an already impacted water supply. The City of Watsonville received grant funding through the State of California's Sustainable Communities Planning Grant and Incentive Program in December 2012 to complete a Climate Action Plan (PDF) and carbon offset program.

The Climate Action Plan and Carbon Fund Ordinance were adopted by the City Council on February 24, 2015.

What is a Climate Action Plan?

A climate action plan is a blueprint that shows how the City will address the challenges of climate change. The position of the Federal Government and the State of California (among others), is that human activity is changing the earth's climate through the release of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels. The climate action plan lays out ways in which the City can reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in order to reduce the level of climate change for future generations.

The climate action plan will show us ways that we can make our homes more energy efficient, and how we can take advantage of renewable energy resources. Further, it will also build on the policies in the Watsonville Vista 2030 General Plan in recommending smart growth development, more pedestrian friendly corridors, transit solutions, and ways to reduce waste.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The City has already taken significant action to reduce its carbon emissions and continues to seek new cost-effective methods to further reduce its impact on the global climate. See what the City has been doing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

What Can You Do?

There are many ways that YOU can help reduce GHG emissions and reduce the effects they have on the environment.  Your CARBON FOOTPRINT is the measure of the GHGs produced by your own actions.  If we each reduce our individual carbon footprint, we can make a big difference not only in Watsonville but across California!
