Adopt-A-Trail Program

The City of Watsonville (COW) in partnership with Watsonville Wetlands Watch (WWW) has developed an Adopt-A-Trail Program where volunteers can assist with maintaining, enhancing and monitoring the City of Watsonville trails.

Who can adopt a trail?

Anyone with an interest in trails and the outdoors is welcome to participate. Individuals, families, businesses, community and service organizations, churches, schools and scout troops are all examples of volunteers. Participants under 16 years old, however, must be accompanied by an adult.

Why should you participate?

This program will provide an opportunity for you to be actively involved in conservation and preservation. Helping to maintain and enhance the trails improve the resource for all to enjoy. The effort brings trail and nature enthusiasts closer to the environment and their community. Volunteers will enjoy the time they spend outdoors and personal satisfaction gained through volunteerism.

What do volunteers do?

Adopt-a-trail participants will work to help maintain the trails free of litter. Families or individuals can participate any weekend day by visiting the City's Nature Center. Larger groups are asked to schedule a day ahead of time to participate. The Center will provide all necessary materials, instruction, and safety guidelines.

AAT Training Requirements

  • Volunteers must attend a 15 minute safety training through the Nature Center prior to volunteering.

Participation Guidelines

  • Volunteers can choose a trail section to help maintain during each AAT working day or can check in with Center staff for updates on other trails that need attention.
  • Volunteers can provide their own tools, but loaner materials will be available for check out at the Nature Center (litter grabbers, gloves, safety vests, garbage bags and graffiti removal wipes).
  • Volunteers are also encouraged to participate in Community Restoration Events:
    • World Wetlands Day - February
    • Earth Day - April
    • National Trails Day - June
    • Coastal Clean Up Day - September
    • Make a Difference Day - October

The City thanks and recognizes with gratitude the hard work of volunteers to keep our City beautiful. We so much appreciate your time and dedication.

Trail Sponsorship

In addition to Adopt-a-trail participants, we are also soliciting program sponsors for the Adopt-a-trail giving circle that will help support the Adopt-a-trail program. Interested persons and businesses should contact the Nature Center at 768-1622
