Curbside Recycling Program

The City provides recycling services to the Watsonville community as part of their regular garbage services. You can download the Curbside Recycling Program brochure below:

Why Recycle?

  • Recycling reduces the need to create more landfills

    Plastic bags: cleaned, dried, bagged & tied into one plastic bag. No loose plastic bags.

  • Items you recycle are sent to factories and made into new products
  • When you recycle paper, less trees are cut down
  • Recycling metal and glass reduces mining

Recycle in your blue cart:

  • Plastic –  all plastics except Styrofoam. Recycle plastic bottles, jugs, tubs, nursery pots, broken toys, etc. NO STYROFOAM of any kind.
  • Plastic bags – cleaned, dried, bagged and tied into one plastic bag. No loose plastic bags.
  • Tin and aluminum cans – rinsed
  • Newspaper
  • Magazines and catalogs
  • Cardboard and cartons – flattened
  • Junk mail and office paper
  • Paper bags

Do not place in recycling cart:

  • Garbage
  • Styrofoam – NO peanuts, blocks, cups and trays
  • Food waste
  • Soiled cardboard
  • Window glass or light bulbs
  • Pyrex or pottery
  • Toilet paper, tissues, napkins and paper towels
  • Motor oil and filter – The City requires oil to be placed in plastic jugs provided by the City and filters to be placed in plastic bags. Free jugs are available at City Hall, O’Reilley Auto Parts, Waste & Recycling Drop-off*. Set both at the curb next to the blue cart

Accepted only at the Waste & Recycling Drop-off*

  • Yard trimmings
  • Computers, monitors, other electronics, all fluorescent lights and batteries
  • Household appliances
  • Hazardous waste (second Saturday of each month)

Recycle the right items. Check the sticker on your cart lid. Carts are inspected and fees are applied for improper recycling. So do your part and recycle correctly!

When and where do I set out my blue recycling cart?

  • Place your recycling cart in the street in front of your house every other week. use calendar on cart.

    Gray-Garbage/Blue-Recycling/Recyle used motor oil & filter

  • Place carts at end of driveway if street is crowded.
  • Leave a three foot space between your cart and any cars, signs, walls or poles.
  • Leave a three foot space BETWEEN your carts.
  • Wheels should touch the curb.
  • Cart handle faces your house.
  • Gray cart is for garbage only.
  • Blue cart is for recycling only.
  • Set your cart out the night before.
  • Garbage and recycling service starts at 4:30 a.m.
  • Do not compact contents or overload cart – cart won’t empty. Lid must be closed.
  • Parking restrictions in effect on some streets (check street signs or cart stickers).
  • Park cars in driveway on night before collection day.

Free Curbside Pick up

  • A 2.5 gallon oil jug provided by the City is REQUIRED for curbside pick-up.
  • Set your oil jug at the curb next to your blue recycling cart. Your oil jug will be returned whenever possible.

You can also recycle used oil filters by placing them in any plastic bag. Drain filter first. Set the filter at curb next to oil jug.
