“Roads to Success” Program

Roads to Success

The Board of State and Community Corrections awarded the Watsonville Police Department a $250,000 grant in 2013 to administer the “Caminos hacia el Éxito” “Roads to Success” program. This program is used as an alternative to detention for youth who have committed a first offense and offers them community- based services that include restorative justice, comprehensive counseling plans, parent training and family therapy.

During 2013, 105 youth were referred to the Caminos Program. Of those, 91 young people (87%) agreed to participate and completed over 2,100 hours of community service. In addition, the Police Activities League provided the youth with recreational activities and mentorships that helped them enhance their self confidence and interpersonal skills. These prevention and intervention strategies reduce the risk of delinquency, improve youth behavior and provide offender accountability.

The success of this program is due to the collaboration of the following partners:

•             Watsonville Neighborhood Services Division

•             Watsonville Police Activities League (PAL)

•             Pajaro Valley Prevention & Student Assistance Program (PVPSA)

•             Pajaro Valley Unified School District

•             Santa Cruz County Probation Department

•             Santa Cruz County Office of Education
