Preventing Wildland/Brush Fires

Fire Sakata Wildland

Since January 1, 2014, Watsonville Fire has responded to six fires involving brush/vegetation and trees. With 2013 being the driest year in recorded history for many areas of California and current conditions suggesting no change in sight for 2014, Watsonville Fire is urging residents to be cautious with anything than can cause a spark or open flames. Remember, there is no agricultural/controlled burning allowed in the City limits.

Here are some tips to help you prevent grass/brush fires:

  • Never use lawn mowers in dry vegetation.
  • Clear dead weeds and vegetation.
  • Remove leaves and needles from gutters.
  • Never pull over in dry grass.
  • Ensure trailer chains don’t drag on the ground.
  • Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained.
  • Have proper tire pressure to avoid driving on wheel rim.
  • Never let your brake pads wear too thin.
  • Make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished.
  • Report any suspicious activities to prevent arson by calling (831) 471-1170.
