Pinto Lake – Free Carp Competition

The City announced it will pay anyone who catches carp fish in Pinto Lake. The city is offering 25 cents per pound of carp caught because it wants to slash the number of carp living in the lake.

The City has placed a bounty on carp fish heads because the bottom feeding animals are guilty of adding to Pinto Lake’s toxic algae bloom problem. Carp release phosphorous into Pinto Lake which fuels algae blooms.

City leaders have been working together with water quality experts to clean Pinto Lake of its algae for the past few years. In addition to the “cash for carp” the Parks and Community Services Department has also organized an ongoing free carp competition at Pinto Lake.

The fisherman who catches the most total carp in a month can win prizes including free boat rentals, fishing equipment  and cash. Catches are tallied and prizes are awarded on the last Saturday of every month.
