National Night Out

The Neighborhood Services Division of the City of Watsonville’s Parks and Community Services Department, and the Watsonville Police Department have begun planning their most popular crime prevention, education and awareness event. This year the City will host an array of popular National Night Out events throughout the city simultaneously. Last year alone, 22 neighborhoods joined the festivities as they rallied, prepared, and gave crime a going away for good event. On Tuesday August 6, neighborhoods in Watsonville will once again join forces with thousands of communities around the world. In all, over 37.5 million people are expected to participate in America’s Night Out Against Crime.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnership; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

From 4-10 p.m.on August 6, residents in neighborhoods throughout Watsonvilleand across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside getting to know their neighbors and police. Many neighborhoods will host a variety of special events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police and fire fighters, flashlight walks, contests, youth activities, and anticrime rallies. Residents will also have the opportunity to meet and talk with of their Council representatives and discuss issues in their neighborhood. McGruff the crime fighting dog and his niece Crime Pup will accompany the Watsonville Police Cadets. They will  help spread the word to children and families that they can help Take a Bite Out Of Crime.
