Mayor Hernandez Attends Conference to Attract New Businessess

In an effort to attract new businesses to Watsonville, Mayor Felipe Hernandez attended the 2016 International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Western Conference in San Diego. ICSC hosts a conference each year that draws thousands of city leaders looking to network with different franchises and independently owned businesses all at once.

ICSC is the global trade association of the shopping center industry. Its more than 70,000 members include shopping center owners, developers, managers, investors, retailers, brokers, academics, and public officials.

While at the conference Mayor Hernandez had an opportunity to connect with several potential businesses, some of which included Buffalo Wild Wings, Panera, Burlington Coat Factory and DSS Shoes. While none of these businesses made a commitment to come to Watsonville, it certainly helps to make that connection and let them know Watsonville is interested and willing to work with them.

“I attended the League of Cities Mayor’s Forum this summer and Economic Development experts say the new best practice is for Mayor’s to attend these retail trade shows, because it shows that the policy makers are business friendly. Furthermore, businesses talk to industry people all the time, public officials at these shows are a fresh face”, says Mayor Hernandez.

“It’s great to see Watsonville representatives attend these events. The shopping center industry is essential to economic development. They are a significant job creator and critical revenue source for the communities they serve. Sales taxes fund important municipal services like firefighters, police, schools, and infrastructure like roads and parks. We are proud of the exceptional work the City of Watsonville is doing,” says Brian Turlington, Executive Director of the Monterey Bay Economic Partnership.

“We’re in the midst of a resurgence that Watsonville hasn’t seen since before the recession, and we need to be ready for all the opportunities that are ahead of us. I think best practices demand continuously refreshed information and building strong relationships. That is why I’m here in person at the ICSC trade show,” says Mayor Hernandez.
