Keep Your Holiday Tasteful Without Being Wasteful!

christmas-gift-wrapping-2During the holiday season, which begins on Thanksgiving and runs through New Year’s Day, we produce twice as much waste as we do during the rest of the year! This includes the paper plates, cups, napkins, gift wrap, Christmas trees, you name it we produce it. Every year, we throw away 2.6 billion greeting cards, 4 million tons of wrapping paper and shopping bags and 38,000 miles of ribbon! So what can we do to “keep our holiday tasteful, without being wasteful?”

You don’t have to go out and buy gift wrap. You can use newspaper to wrap your presents. For a child, use the Sunday/Saturday comics. Use the sports section for the sports fanatic in your life and if you have a business oriented person, use the business section.  You can also use paper bags or extra material you may have around the house. Also, reusable cloth gift bags are great as you can use them to do your grocery shopping. Take the challenge and be super creative this holiday season and help conserve our environment!

Holiday Trees – Recycle your tree after Christmas but remember, trees sprayed with flock are not accepted! Consider buying an artificial tree or potted live tree that can be reused year after year.
