Governor’s Mandate to Reduce Water Use

govbrownAfter four years of severe drought, California’s governor issued new water restrictions with potential fines of up to $500 per infraction. The State also mandated a water reduction goal for each city. Most cities must cut water use by 25% in 2015, as compared to 2013. The City of Watsonville is mandated to cut water use by 20%.

Last year, City residents and businesses did an incredible job and cut water use by 12%.  We need to maintain that 2014 reduction AND cut another 8% to meet the 20% requirement this year.

Please follow these required steps:

  • DO NOT water landscape during and 48 hours following measurable precipitation.
  • DO NOT wash sidewalks, driveways or parking lots.
  • DO NOT  allow landscape irrigation water to run off your property.
  • DO NOT wash your car UNLESS the hose is fitted with a shut-off nozzle.
  • DO REPAIR broken irrigation and plumbing equipment.
  • DO use a shut-off nozzle on all hoses.
  • DO ADJUST sprinkler heads to prevent water waste.
  • DO report water leaks or waste by calling Customer Service at 768-3133 or at
  • DO follow the TWO-DAYS-PER-WEEK watering schedule:

Sprinkler watering is allowed for up to 15 minutes, only 2 days per week:

  • Odd numbered houses water on Wed/Sat
  • Even numbered houses water on Thurs/Sun
Sprinklers may only run before 9am or after 5pm
Drip irrigation and hand watering with a shut-off hose nozzle are permitted anytime.

There are ways to have a beautiful landscape and cut outdoor water use by half or more. The City offers two programs to help residents and businesses:

Free Landscape Water Conservation Consultation:

Request a free water conservation consultation Trained staff will visit your property to evaluate your landscape and indoor water use, and make recommendations to help you conserve water. If you need help re-setting irrigation controllers, this is the program for you. Call Customer Service at 768-3133 to set up an appointment.

New City Lawn Replacement Rebate Program:

To help residents conserve water, the City launched a Lawn Replacement Rebate Program. This rebate reimburses customers $.75 per square foot for qualifying lawn replacement projects (maximum rebate of $500 for residential and $1,000 for commercial). Before applying to this program, we recommend that you research landscape design options and costs. To receive a rebate, interested customers must first  draw a simple landscape plan and then schedule a site visit to get project approved. For more information or to schedule your site visit, go to or call the City’s landscape water expert Michael Johnson at (831) 325-3376.
