Good News @ the Library
Great things are happening at the library! After recently celebrating our fifth year anniversary in the new building and paying off our debt, the library staff is eagerly preparing for a fall full of new offerings. The biggest news is that we have been open on Saturdays at the Main Library since September! After 5 years of not offering Saturday hours downtown, the library has turned a financial corner and is offering Saturday hours (12:00 – 4:00 pm). All services will be available – computer lab, reference help and programs. But that’s just one of the new offerings at the library.
Technology has presented us with many opportunities and different ways to access information. Until recently, while the library maintained all traditional services (adult and teen programs, story times, free computer access, inter-library loan, and electronic databases for research) by working harder with less, we have been unable to offer one of the most requested technologies – downloadable books. As of September 15th, eBooks has been made available at the library. We have purchased a subscription to Overdrive – an electronic book service that makes it easy to check out books from the library to read on your e-reader. Many current titles will be available as well as thousands of classic titles through the free Gutenberg collection which is part of the subscription.
Added to that, the library recently added two new online educational databases. One for language learning called Transparent Language and a site for continuing education courses called Universal Class. Any member of the community who has a valid library card can log on to either of these databases through the library’s website and start learning a language (51 are available) or take one of 500 courses -from the ABC’s of Algebra to Yoga 101.
The library staff is eager to show you these new services. Come by or call us and find out why the Watsonville Library is the best deal in town.
