City Manager Charles A. Montoya announced today the City’s Municipal Airport will, effectively immediately, report directly to the Office of the City Manager. This organizational shift of the Municipal Airport management, staff and operations to the City Manager’s Office underscores the commitment that the Municipal Airport is a vital asset to the Community, City and County.

“In my experience a General Aviation airport is a community’s link to commerce, opportunity and growth. Transportation portals, and their associated infrastructure, such as the City’s municipal airport are key drivers in current and future economic development.” stated Montoya. Montoya continued, “Given its unique position as a City owned/operated airport, the only airport within Santa Cruz County, our Municipal Airport is home for some of our most valued local agri-businesses and corporations, but also a focal point for current and potential growth of our City.”

The organizational change from a Division within the Public Works Department to a Division reporting directly to the Office of the City Manager is also an endorsement of the Municipal Airport’s progress over the last five years. Such progress has been recognized by the Federal Aviation’s Administration (FAA) 2012 General  Aviation Airports: A National A sset”  study which recognized Watsonville Municipal as the “posterchild” for regional airports.

Additionally, infrastructure improvements including satellite-based landing capability, taxiway reconstruction, a successful restaurant, terminal renovation and the recent ground breaking for construction of a 14,500 square foot hangar maintenance facility are just a few of the recent airport successes.

“The past is prologue as far as I can see. These airport improvements would not have occurred without the support of City staff, City Council, and assistance from the airport community and its pilots.” We must continue to build on this foundation and today’s announcement reaffirms the airport’s role in the City’s organizational structure as a vital and valued asset.” stated City Manager Montoya.
