Caminos Hacia el Éxito Initiative

caminos progarmRoads-to-Success

The Watsonville Police Department (WPD) implemented the Caminos hacia el Éxito Initiative in 2012 – 2014 with the assistance of a grant from the Board of State and Community Corrections. This is a diversion program for Watsonville youth between the ages of 10 to 17 who commit a first offense (misdemeanor). The WPD offers the youth an alternative to confinement and keeps them away from the juvenile legal system by redirecting them toward evidence based treatments.

A benefit of a diversion program includes a reduction in the escalation of delinquent behavior and maintains youth engaged with the community. The data below shows the success of the program during 2012-2014:

  • 229 youth participated in the program
  • 96% completed the program
  • 89% of the youth who completed the program did not re-offend within 6-12 months after completion
  • 6,795 hours of community services were completed by the youth

The WPD is grateful to the community for supporting Measure G, the funding source that’s continuing to support the Caminos Program since January 2015. For more information regarding this program, please call the Watsonville Police Department at (831) 768-3300 or PVPSA at (831) 768-6445.
